I love hanging out with my couples before the wedding day. Whether it’s for a day-before bridal session or an engagement session months in advance–I love our time together. It serves as our first in-person meeting while simultaneously providing a chance for both of you to get comfortable in front of the camera. The result is wedding photography that really flows on the day! Find how the three of us first bonded at this pink-themed summer engagement shoot.
When choosing your engagement photoshoot location, I generally recommend a spot that’s part of your love story. It can be a place that you frequent often or one that plays an important role in a memory you share together. Erica and Brandon landed on a pink theme for their entire session and found a location that perfectly fit this look!
On the hunt for pink, we landed at Coco B’s, a bar and restaurant in Arlington, Virginia that’s filled with summer vibes. The destination describes itself as a “tropical-chic oasis with elevated island fare and cocktails.” It boasts two bars, a patio, and a rooftop overseeing the Clarendon neighborhood. While I’m your go-to engagement photographer in DC, I also love exploring the greater DC Metro Area at unique places like this one!
The site’s level of “pinkness” met Erica and Brandon’s requirements with details such as pink-infused tropical decor (flamingos were everywhere!). Several neon signs on the walls had statements that also encapsulating the vibe: “too glam to give a damn,” and “pink as f**k!” This was another connection to their wedding day as the glam aesthetic was utilized throughout their wedding day decor.
This bride claims pink not only as her favorite color, but also as a part of her identity! That’s why every shade was also incorporated into their pink wedding day. The color was used for everything from the invitations and decor, to cotton candy that was set ablaze to reveal the cake!
Coco B’s allowed us to visit early before opening, which some restaurants and cocktail bars in DC allow for a minimum fee. The couple was able to make several engagement outfit changes using the different backgrounds that this destination provided.
Due to their fun-loving personalities, the couple broke out into several different activities throughout their session. My contribution was providing pink heart-shaped sunglasses that they played with throughout. What followed was some dancing by the bar, cocktail sipping, playing cornhole on the rooftop, and even taking a stab at some aerial yoga moves together!
Adding other personal notes to round out their engagement shoot experience, we took to the Washington, DC city streets for the first portion of their session so their pup could be included. This involved another engagement shoot outfit of t-shirts from Duke University where they first met!
It’s always possible to include your beloved pet in your session when we plan accordingly and find a spot that makes them most comfortable. This can be within your own home, along a trail that you regularly walk or both like this couple did!
What I love about doing a half or full-day engagement or adventure session is the flexibility it provides for locations and outfit changes that turn it into a date! For these two, the first requirement was finding a location that equally celebrated the magic that is the color pink!
Erica and Brandon wanted their engagement shoot to be super fun and to show off their shared interests and personality. That’s why they included their favorite things: their pup, the color pink, and their new hobby together: aerial yoga. They also incorporated these aerial moves into their wedding first dance!.
These lovebirds were just so happy and I had so much fun thinking outside of the box for their session. They even incorporated these engagement photos into the welcome sign at their wedding! Enjoying life through being active and having fun together is the hallmark of their relationship. Their love was so easy to capture!
