It’s amazing when a wedding day is actually how you envision it. Even if you can’t quite picture your wedding day as you’re planning it, when you see it coming together you just know it’s right. Taylor and Cole envisioned a darker, almost gothic vibe with the day still feeling like a bright celebration. They found the perfect balance using what their venue had to offer combined with touches of velvet at this winter wedding.
The bride landed on classic red bridesmaids dresses but added a velvet twist. This would both keep the ladies warm and be a bonus winter detail. Staying in line with the gothic feel, these red velvet dresses were paired with black fur wraps. The velvet and furs added so much texture to the photos and brought all the winter feels into the spotlight!
The other half of creating the perfect velvet winter wedding was their venue, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern of Middleburg, Virginia. The entire design of the wedding really leaned into the intimate, cottage vibe that the Inn offers. With the dark wood and dim lighting inside the Tavern, the couple wanted something that would lighten up the space but still give off that winter vibe (see more below). Brightness was brought into this dark winter space through gorgeous black taper candles and baby’s breath runners that ran along the tables (created by Cedar and Lime Co).
If you’re planning on a ceremony in the winter months, keep in mind the weather and the light. The sun sets earlier in wintertime so to account for this we took pre-ceremony photos prior to the sun setting. Having the help of a wedding planner and second photographer made it possible to coordinate taking all the necessary photos! Utilizing warmer clothing with full tuxedos and velvet dresses with fur wraps made an outdoor winter wedding ceremony possible.
Other beautiful touches to the couples winter wedding was reading their vows during their first look out in the garden. As a photographer, I LOVE all of the different spaces that The Red Fox has to offer. It’s a secret garden paradise!
Taylor also had a family handkerchief around her bouquet that had been passed down within the family. There were so many parts of the day that made it uniquely and wholly their own. As a wedding day should be! From the wedding venue’s style, to the velvet winter-themed bridesmaid gowns, what mattered the most to this couple was exactly what their day was about.
