There’s no place like home. I will never say no to photographing adventure ideas that take us from mountaintops to ocean floors and the forests in between. But, when that day also includes doing your favorite activities together in your own home–I’m 1000% in! For this couple’s engagement photo session, we started at their house then traveled to their favorite neighborhood places. See how we captured these lovebirds’ winter engagement photoshoot at the spots that meant the most to them!
It was a cold December day in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia when I visited these two for their in-home engagement session. It just happened to fall within the Christmas season which made the time feel even more festive and celebratory against the backdrop of Christmas decorations.
First up for the winter engagement photoshoot was capturing Kylie and James’ love for food, drinks (espresso for starters), and some special furry friends. We were joined by their two fur babies while the couple wore coordinating sweatsuits embellished with an image of each pup!
There is seriously so much magic in capturing your home life. Those everyday activities that seem so ordinary are really what make your life experience unique to the two of you. It’s capturing these “normal” happenings that create beautiful snapshots of your life at this moment in time. I love photographing my clients in their home, doing activities like making homemade pizza together (with the help of their pups and some wine!).
Second only to the attachment to their home is the couple’s love for their town. Home for these two is in Old Town Alexandria. It is a place that has so many options for photos in every engagement season. Kylie and James wanted their engagement photoshoot to reflect this love so we visited some of their favorite memory-making locations.
With an appreciation of both downtown itself and the adjacent parks, our first stop led us to some woods by their house. A trail that they frequent often with their pair of pups, it was easy to find our way to some ideal sunset spots.
After returning their dogs home, we then continued with their outdoor winter engagement photos by exploring the cobblestone streets of Old Town Alexandria.
This winter engagement photoshoot was turned up a notch as we extended the activities after dark. The couple then changed into their fifth outfit of the day (having switched per location). Kylie and James went for cocktails at Virtue Feed & Grain (still in Alexandria) pulling off a more fashionable and sexy vibe within the dark and romantic setting of this historic city.
A full-day adventure may sound like it’s supposed to be a 10-mile hike but it doesn’t have to be! It is simply a non-rushed date day that provides us with enough time for various activities, locations, and engagement shoot outfits. It’s capturing your ordinary day in an artistic way that you can look back upon for years to come.
The honesty that comes out through the comfy and cozy vibes of home sessions is always so personal and special. These two were just so sweet, happy, and down for anything. This is one of those engagement sessions that I could share with any couple to showcase what’s possible. Not that any portion of their time needs to be directly replicated, but the session’s heart and purpose definitely should!
This is what these sessions are truly about: a celebration of your relationship and the love story that placed you on the path leading to your wedding day.
