This wedding day was a bluegrass-inspired, laid-back vibe with a boho style accented by pops of color. More than anything, it was totally them. The couple wanted their photos to appear both natural and dynamic, capturing all the rich colors of their wedding design. There were so many stories to be told on this day that we tried to capture them all through their photos! See how their boho style and barn wedding ideas inspired this day!
Margaret and Jared met in college and together shared both a feline fur baby named Mo and a human baby named Maya. They wanted to celebrate their life together while keeping the day simple by declining many wedding day traditions. The couple opted instead to pull from their collection of barn wedding ideas which included many DIY elements: hand-selected bridesmaid dresses in different shades of green, friends and family performing the ceremony music, and bridesmaids doing their own hair and makeup.
With Jared being a vegetable farmer, for their meal they chose Root and Stem Catering, a farm-to-table caterer who specializes in locally-sourced veggies. The wedding flowers were also from a local flower farm providing fresh florals on the day of the wedding! A jeweler had also handmade the engagement ring and wedding bands which were delivered personally by the best man.
All of these go-with-the-flow wedding vibes also carried over into the barn wedding ideas Margaret and Jared used to create the design and atmosphere. Natural elements and floral patterns were prevalent throughout including wildflower bouquets, blue floral charger plate design, and flowers decorating the rustic wedding cake. Even the couple’s daughter, Maya, “walked” the bride down the aisle wearing a floral crown. Margaret’s orange heels also added to the rustic wedding colors matching the look of their wedding invitations.
One primary element that created the overall vibe of the day was the bluegrass music. Margaret and Jared are lovers of both old country and bluegrass. Darren Nicholson Band from Asheville, North Carolina (the couple’s hometown) provided the reception music for a Honky Tonk dance party. Winding Creek Farm was chosen as the setting out of the Virginia barn wedding venues. It’s positioned right outside of Lovettsville, a historic town in the heart of Virginia wine country.
The Winding Creek Farm provides a 5,000-square-foot 118 year-old rustic wedding barn with two levels. The upper level serves as a rain plan location for the ceremony. The lower level has outdoor and indoor options for cocktail hour (plus a 90 seated guests reception option) and the upper level fits 150 seated guests (this wedding hosted 130 guests). Natural light slips through the windows and the barn is lit by a chandelier and twinkle lights at night.
It was a really fun, relaxing time which is exactly what they wanted. Setting aside traditions allowed them to personalize their wedding day pulling from their own barn wedding ideas. They opted for personal vows and skipped the first look, instead enjoying their own celebratory drink together before joining cocktail hour. Appetizers included soft pretzels and beer cheese and the groomsmen tossed Jared up in the air during the wedding party photos! There’s a story in every photo from this rustic barn wedding showing what makes these two so much better together.
