Best Places to Propose in Washington, DC

Couple holds hands at washington dc proposal

Though Washington, DC primarily boasts of its foundational history and stunning landmarks, it also sets the scene for so much more. Thanks to its waterfront walks and exceptional architecture there are many private spots to get down on one knee in Washington, DC. Here are the best places I recommend for couples to propose in Washington, DC!

The National Mall

Proposal in washington dc

With two of the most famous monuments and memorials in front of you, the National Mall is one of the best places in Washington, DC to propose! The Lincoln Memorial stands at one end and the Washington Monument at the other–you just can’t beat these views! Whether its day or nighttime, taking your other half here to propose always provides a beautiful sight.

The Tidal Basin

Every Spring, the Tidal Basin explodes with pink and white as the cherry blossom trees bloom. It is a sight to behold and love is literally in the air as the petals fall like snow. It is an easy place to get lost in the beauty that lasts for such a short amount of time. If timed right, it can provide a picturesque romantic backdrop to your proposal.

Kennedy Center’s Victura Park at the REACH

Kennedy Center's Victura Park at the REACH

This park overlooks the Potomac and Georgetown and is a beautiful spot for a sunset proposal. You can find private areas in the park or right under the trees on the terrace by Georgetown. The two places go hand in hand for both a proposal and a celebration at a Georgetown restaurant following the proposal!

Rock Creek Park

Whether you decide to bike, jog, or just walk, it’s easy to enjoy this beautiful park of 2,100 acres. It’s a perfect location for a proposal or an adventurous engagement session with the many trails to hike and spots to picnic. Boulder Bridge is a particularly romantic stone bridge you’ll find along the way on Beach Drive.

During winter, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is one of the best places in Washington DC to propose. The romantic atmosphere on the ice rink is inspirational especially when followed by cookies and hot chocolate at the on-site Pavilion Café. On the other hand, if cold weather isn’t your thing, you can still visit and have a good time, as the rink transforms into a fountain during warm weather.

This spot is a little outside of the city, but so worth the short drive if you and your partner love being surrounded by nature. It has a beautiful coast line with all those PNW feels. BONUS FEATURE: it looks amazing, even in the winter! Check out more from this surprise winter proposal at Leesylvania State Park just outside of Washington, DC!

Meridian Hill Park

Meridian Hill Park is located in Adams Morgan echoing the style of its Spanish steps with romantic alcoves throughout for private moments. You can share a wonderful picnic completely off the radar in this super green park. Take a walk with your other half before or after you pop the question and then go to an awesome spot in Adams Morgan, U street, or Dupont (which are all close by) to celebrate!

If you’re already planning your wedding, you can consider this spot to celebrate your love in an elopement!

Georgetown Waterfront

The Georgetown waterfront is most romantic at sunset! Walking along the Potomac with the city skyline behind it is so picturesque. This walk offers so many little alcoves that are perfect for privacy. There is the added bonus of being super close to some amazing restaurants where you two can celebrate afterwards!

Smithsonian Moongate Garden

This is a perfect backdrop that screams Washington, DC without being a monument. It’s a very private, intimate space that will make you swoon over the castle in the background! Take a walk in this elegant garden surrounded by greenery located at the back of the Smithsonian castle. SECRET TIP: come here in the Spring and this spot will be filled with cherry blossoms!

YOUR “Spot”

With this proposal idea, it really incorporates your story and celebrates how you two already spend your time together. What is “your place” in Washington, DC? Maybe it’s taking walks at the National Aboretum or going to Nationals games together. Incorporating your story will make the proposal even more meaningful!

Find a spot you like? Let’s make your proposal plans! I would love to hear which location stood out to you!
